Green Tomato Chutney

Our local Turkish store had a basket full of green, fresh looking tomatoes in the vegetable section this weekend. Although they're readily available in India, I've somehow never bought them before. This time though, they looked very tempting and I had to take home a few. Unsure of what to do with them I thought I'd ask my Mom-in-law for help.
My mother-in-law often makes very good Green Tomato Koshimbir and also Green Tomato Chutney and help was therefore just a phone call away!
I tried out her recipe today and made some chutney and it turned out really well!

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

Green Tomatoes - 3 medium sized ones
Mustard seeds - half a teaspoon
Asafoetida - a pinch
Urad Dal - one teaspoon
Methi Seeds - quarter teaspoon
Green Chillies - 2
Roasted Unsalted Peanuts - a teaspoon
Coriander leaves - chopped,one tablespoon
Salt- to taste
Sugar - to taste
Oil - for the tadka

Preparation:

Chop the tomatoes, green chillies and the coriander leaves.

Method:

Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds. When they splutter, add a pinch of asafoetida and then add the urad dal and the meethi seeds and fry for a minute(or until they turn slightly brownish) taking care that they don't burn. Add the chopped green tomatoes and sauté them until the begin to soften. Now, add the roasted peanuts and cook for another minute. Toss in the coriander leaves, salt and sugar.
Let the mixture cool slightly and then grind it to a paste in a mixer.
Your chutney is ready and is a perfect accompaniment to any Indian meal!

  7. Hi Laxmi,
Guess what, A couple of days ago I had purchased some green tomatoes since those looked so fresh and tempting. I wanted to make something tasty from those. Lo and behold, here was your recipe!
I made it right away before tomatoes got stale. We all enjoyed this really tasty and tangy(chatakdar) chutney. A variation: roasted sesame powder in place of /with peanut powder.
Thanks, Laxmi. -Rohini. By the way Sunandan joins me in appreaciating the chutney.
